The same applies to natural stone such as granite, gneiss, marble, limestone, quartzite, sandstone, etc. Each piece of stone is unique, a unique specimen. Many are similar, but none are the same. The division into hard and soft rock makes it easy for us, but it doesnīt tell you anything about the quality of the individual rock - more about the properties and the resulting suitability for different uses and applications. While assessing my customers, I explain to the best of my knowledge the properties of the desired and offered natural stones. As varied as the application and suitability are, so varied is the history of the origin of the stone. Deep black granite (often referred to as "Nero Assoluto" in the trade) is geologically a dolerite, a volcanic effusive rock. Granite with "Salt Pepper Structure" is a deep rock with clear light-dark grain – just like salt and pepper - in different colors, but evenly. The grain size depends essentially on the cooling rate (slow cooling leads to large grain, fast to small). "Bianco Carrara", the best-known representative of marble, is a metamorphic rock that is transformed by pressure and heat. The basis of all types of marble is limestone, but its polishing ability has led to the fact that limestone is also referred to as marble. The main part of both is calcite, formed by marble just crystalline. This results in a similar usability. The natural stones obtained in Mallorca are compact limestone (eg Binisalem) or more or less loosely deposited sedimentary rocks such as "Piedra de Santanyi" or "Mares" (slightly different depending on location and also slightly different in structure and density). For these reasons, it is also understood that the division of countertops is based on technical criteria. Natural stone, obtained as quarry blocks in quarries, is subject to natural variations in size, structure and color. This and the different properties for each material require individual solutions. My decades of experience as a stonemason both in the extraction, as well as in the processing of natural stone, provides you with planning security and thus also for satisfactory results.
